The Oregon Climate Dialogue is a national model for engaging young people in conversation with state policy-makers about their future. The goal of the Dialogue—held in conjunction with the National Teach-In—is for every member of the state legislature to attend a non-partisan, round-table dialogue on global warming policy at a college or high school in their district on that day.
The discussion will be focused around recommendations emerging from the Oregon Global Warming Commission established by Oregon Governor Kulongoski. Oregon is poised to become a national leader on global warming, but this will only happen if the voices of people, especially young people who speak for the future, can be heard. If you are from Oregon, we need your help to identify individuals at your school or in your community who would be willing to:
- Invite your state senator and/or representative
- Organize a non-partisan roundtable.

The back-drop for this discussion is, of course, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change science. Without aggressive US federal and state level action in the next couple of years, the last window of opportunity to hold warming to 3-4 degrees F will close. As educators, we owe the students and citizens in our state an opportunity for focused discussion about the critical policy decisions we will make—or not make—in the next year.
Please contact Maryl Kunkel, our Oregon state-wide coordinator, for further information.
